BMT Program Seeks Fourth Accreditation From National Organization

UAB Synopsis, Vol. 29, No. 03, January 20, 2010

UAB’s Bone Marrow Transplant and Cell Therapy Program will undergo an accreditation visit by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) on January 22. The nonprofit corporation, founded in 1996, conducts voluntary inspection and accreditation in the field of cellular therapy. FACT’s major objective is promoting quality medical and laboratory practice in hematopoietic progenitor cell transplantation and other therapies that use cellular products.

FACT has developed evidence based-standards that apply to all phases of collection, processing, storage, and administration of cells derived from bone marrow or peripheral blood.  FACT confers accreditation on organizations after successful documentation of compliance with current standards, determined by surveyors’ evaluation of written documents and on-site inspection.

“UAB’s Adult Transplant Program and Children’s Hospital of Alabama Pediatric Transplant Program are seeking a fourth joint FACT accreditation,” says Sandra Rudolph, RN, MSN, administrative director of operations, Bone Marrow Transplant and Cell Therapy Program. “The combined UAB and Children’s programs have been accredited since 2000, and we are proud to have achieved this standard of excellence in our field.  We are inspired to continue to deliver the very best quality care possible to our patients.”
