McDonald Receives Two Major Pathology Awards

Dr. McDonaldJay M. McDonald, MD, director of the UAB Center for Metabolic Bone Disease and former chair of the Department of Pathology, recently received two significant awards.

The American Society of Clinical Pathologists awarded Dr. McDonald the Ward Burdick Award for Distinguished Service to Clinical Pathology. It recognizes a member who has made significant contributions to pathology through sustained service to the profession and the organization.

The Association of Pathology Chairs (APC) presented to him its annual Distinguished Service Award, the organization’s highest award. It goes to a person who has made substantial contributions to academic pathology in research, education, or advancement of the discipline in the medical community and for the public. Dr. McDonald was an APC member from 1990 to 2008.

Dr. McDonald is professor of pathology. His academic career has spanned 3 decades and includes the directorship of the Division of Laboratory Medicine at Washington University School of St. Louis for 10 years prior to his recruitment to UAB in 1990, when he became chair of the Department of Pathology. He stepped down from that position in 2008 to pursue his research interests. He was editor in chief of the primary pathology research journal, The American Journal of Pathology, from 2003 to 2008.

In 2005 Dr. McDonald was named Distinguished Faculty Lecturer, the UAB academic medical center’s highest honor.
