Research

Research at UAB has yielded cutting-edge information and practices being put in place at hospitals all over the country.

Most recently, UAB neonatologists published a study in the November 2008 issue of "Pediatrics" detailing new methods for healing pneumothorax in ventilated neonates. The research and study showed that pneumothorax, a condition in which air or gas accumulates in the cavity surrounding an infant's lungs, can be treated without chest tube insertion and surgery. This finding, showing that lungs often heal themselves, saves infants and parents the trauma of undergoing a surgical procedure in the first days of life.
