James K. Kirklin, M.D., director of the UAB Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, has been elected president of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation for 2010.

UAB researchers are working on groundbreaking research into chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injury, in an effort to expand the knowledge base in the development, treatment and outcomes for patients with chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injury.

The first-ever, three-time-zone, simultaneous “kidney swap” took place Wednesday morning, July 30, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Hospital, Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and University of Colorado Hospital, as three transplant recipients underwent surgery at the same time and received lifesaving organs from virtual strangers.
