Mowry Endowed Professorship Established

Dr. MowryThe University of Alabama System Board of Trustees recently established the Robert W. Mowry, MD, Endowed Professorship in the Department of Pathology.

Dr. Mowry was a member of the UAB Department of Pathology faculty for more than 50 years. During his time on the faculty, Dr. Mowry served as director of the Anatomical Pathology Laboratory, director of graduate programs, director of autopsy, and professor and educator.

In addition, he was a professor of health services administration, senior scientist at the University of Alabama Institute of Dental Research, consultant for the Food and Drug Administration, and a visiting scholar in the Department of Pathology at the University of Cambridge in England.

In 1989 he was awarded professor emeritus status for his long and influential career at UAB and in the Department of Pathology.

As an expert in the field of pathology, Dr. Mowry wrote numerous articles and books and served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Histochemistry and Cytochemistry, Stain Technology, American Medical Association Archives of Pathology, and Biotechnics and Histochemistry.

Dr. Mowry received his BS degree from Birmingham-Southern College in 1944 and his MD from Johns Hopkins University in 1946. He subsequently completed an internship and residency at The Medical College of Alabama, now the School of Medicine at UAB. He went on to serve as senior assistant surgeon for the US Public Health Service in Bethesda, Maryland, and to complete a fellowship in Pathology at Boston City Hospital prior to joining UAB.
