CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE

Dr. DoppalapudiHarish Doppalapudi, MBBS, has accepted an appointment as assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Disease. A graduate of Gunter Medical College in Gunter, India, Doppalapudi completed his residency in internal medicine at UAB where he earned the C. Glenn Cobbs Award for clinical excellence and the Thomas N. James Award for research excellence. He has completed fellowships in cardiovascular disease and cardiac electrophysiology at UAB. Doppalapudi’s clinical and research interests include mapping and ablation of complex arrhythmias and pacemaker and defibrillator therapy.

EMERGENCY MEDICINE

Dr. RoskoChristopher J. Rosko, MD, has rejoined UAB as associate professor of emergency medicine. A graduate of Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Rosko completed a pediatric internship at Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco, and an anesthesiology residency at UAB. He has been certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine since 1998. He has previously held several posts at UAB: associate medical director of the School of Health Related Professions (1991-1993), associate medical director of the Emergency Medical Services Program (1991-1994), medical director (1994-1996) and interim chair (1995-1996) of the Department of Emergency Medicine, and medical director of Critical Care Transport (2002-2003). He also served as medical director of Emergency Medicine Education at Baptist Medical Centers (1991-1992), medical director of the Emergency Department at St. Vincent’s Hospital (1994), and medical director of the Emergency Department at Carraway Methodist Medical Center (2003-2005). Additionally Rosko has served as Alabama Department of Public Health Emergency Medical Service medical director (2002-2005) and assistant state health officer of emergency preparedness (2005). He was president and chief executive officer of First Care, an emergency medical physician services company in Birmingham (1996-1999). Rosko’s clinical interests include medical education, emergency medicine services, critical care medicine, and medical ethics.

OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY

Dr. JoinerLaura Lee Rihl Joiner, MD, has accepted a position as assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology in the Division of Women’s Reproductive Healthcare. A graduate of the Medical College of Georgia, she also holds a bachelor’s degree from Sweet Briar College, where she was valedictorian. Joiner, who served in the US Army Medical Corps as a major, was staff physician and gynecology section chief at Reynolds Army Community Hospital, Fort Sill, Oklahoma. She also served at the 31st Combat Support Hospital, Baghdad, Iraq, and was named outstanding obstetrics and gynecology graduate at the San Antonio, Texas, Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium. She also received the Medical Student Teaching Award for PGY-4 class and was Outstanding Chief Resident in Obstetrics and Outstanding Administrative Chief Resident.

OTOLARYNCOLOGY--HEAD AND NECK SURGERY

Dr. WoodworthBradford A. Woodworth, MD, has accepted an appointment as assistant professor of surgery in the Division of Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery. He received his MD degree from Tulane University School of Medicine. He then completed his otolaryngology residency at Medical University of South Carolina, where he was honored with numerous awards for his scientific research and medical student teaching. He comes to UAB from the University of Pennsylvania, where he recently completed a fellowship devoted to the treatment of advanced sinus disease and the minimally invasive treatment of cerebrospinal fluid leaks and sinus and skull base tumors. Woodworth has authored more than 30 articles and book chapters on sinus and nasal topics. His primary research interest is the pathophysiology of chronic sinusitis, and his clinical interests are the medical and surgical treatment of advanced sinus disease, repair of cerebrospinal fluid leaks, and endoscopic resection of nasal and skull base lesions.

PSYCHIATRY AND BEHAVIORAL NEUROBIOLOGY

Dr. RedwineM. Bates Redwine, MD, has accepted an appointment as assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral neurobiology in the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry. A graduate of the Medical College of Georgia, Redwine completed an internship and psychiatry residency at the Medical University of South Carolina and a fellowship in geriatric psychiatry at Emory University. He comes to UAB after 8 years in private practice at the Frank Kay Clinic in Birmingham. Redwine’s clinical interests include late-life depression, dementias, and electroconvulsive therapy.

UROLOGY

Dr. BusbyJ. Erik Busby, MD, has accepted a postion as assistant professor of surgery in the Division of Urology. Busby joins UAB from the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, where he spent 3 years as a fellow in urologic oncology and was awarded the center’s 2006 Trainee Excellence Award and named a scholar of the American Urological Association Foundation. At the University of California, Davis, he completed his internship in the Department of Surgery and residency in the Department of Urology. Busby received his MD degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and holds undergraduate degrees in biomedical and electrical engineering from Vanderbilt University. His clinical interests are genitourinary malignancies with a special interest in bladder cancer and urinary diversions, as well as minimally invasive approaches to prostate and renal cancers. Busby, who has authored more than 30 journal articles and chapters, has been hired as a physician-scientist with research interests that include antiangiogenesis in prostate cancer with bone metastases.
