UAB Synopsis, Vol. 27, No. 13, April 7, 2008

F. Amos Bailey, MD, director of Palliative Care, Birmingham Veteran’s Administration Medical Center, and assistant professor in the Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care, has been elected to the board of directors of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM).

The AAHPM is a professional organization for physicians committed to improving quality of life for patients and families facing serious illness. The organization has supported hospice and palliative medicine through advancement of clinical practice standards and support of research, education, and public policy advocacy for 20 years.

Dr. Bailey received his MD degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine. He completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Vermont and a fellowship in hematology and oncology at UAB.

He has focused his practice on medical education and research in palliative and hospice care. “As hospice and palliative medicine was formally recognized as a subspecialty of medicine last year, we are at a critical juncture in our history,” says Dr. Bailey. “I look forward to working with the AAHPM board of directors to advance their mission and goals through an ever-changing and expanding health care environment.”
