New Rheumatoid Arthritis Clinic Established

UAB Synopsis, Vol. 27, No. 11, March 24, 2008

Rheumatologists S. Louis Bridges Jr, MD, PhD; Jeffrey R. Curtis, MD, MPH; Graciela S. Alarcón, MD, MPH; and Laura B. Hughes, MD, MSPH, cofounded UAB’s new Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) Clinic at The Kirklin Clinic®.

The clinic provides state-of-the-art care to adult RA patients. In light of the sometimes irreversible radiographic damage that results from delayed treatment, physicians can see patients with new-onset synovitis within 2 weeks of referral.

An integrated but optional research component allows investigators to study how RA therapies may be targeted to certain individuals based on their predicted response to single drugs or combinations of drugs.

Gateway to Clinical Trials

Patients will have access to UAB’s many ongoing RA clinical trials for those with various stages of disease, if they so desire. Additionally, the clinic serves as a gateway to American College of Rheumatology-funded trials that are based on the research of Dr. Bridges and Robert H. Carter, MD, and John D. Mountz, MD, PhD.

For scheduling, call 205.801.8187. Physicians with patients needing immediate attention may e-mail Dr. Curtis at jcurtis@uab.edu.
