UAB Synopsis, Vol. 27, No. 9, March 10, 2008
The University of Alabama Health Services Foundation (UAHSF) and its General Endowment Fund (GEF) Committee recently awarded more than $2.7 million in research grants for the 2008 calendar year. A commitment totaling $5 million (including the GEF Awards) was designated to support strategic initiatives and recruitment. After careful evaluation by the respective Review Group Committees, recommendations were made to the GEF Committee and then to the UAHSF Executive Committee and Board of Directors for approval.
“The Health Services Foundation is fully committed to the academic mission of the UAB School of Medicine,” UAHSF Interim President Sergio Stagno, MD, says. “The GEF was established over a decade ago as a mechanism to ensure the success of our research and clinical operations. This funding mechanism of competitive grants is unique among medical school faculty practices,” adds Dr. Stagno, who also is chair of the Department of Pediatrics.
The grants fund initiatives in four research categories: clinical care, laboratory research, patient care research, and medical education. The awards enable university-wide projects benefiting UAHSF and the School of Medicine.
Recruitment of top-notch physician-scientists also is a key priority. An allocation of $750,000 was designated to the Scholar Award Program to attract distinguished scientists and clinicians who bring unusual potential or accomplishments to School of Medicine research. This year, the Scholars Award Program is offering five $150,000 awards to enhance already established recruitment packages for exceptional faculty considering UAB.
