UAB Professor and Alfred Habeeb Chair of Anesthesiology Keith A. Jones, MD, announces the appointment of Eric A. Bedell, MD, as associate professor of anesthesiology.
Dr. Bedell comes to UAB from the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, where he was associate professor of anesthesiology and critical care.
He graduated from the University of Iowa College Of Medicine in Iowa City before completing an internship and residency in anesthesia at Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University and subspecialty training in neurosurgical anesthesiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
Dr. Bedell practiced at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) as staff anesthesiologist, director of neuroanesthesia, and anesthesiologist for the UNMC skull-base surgery team. He also served at the VA Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, as staff anesthesiologist.
He continued his postdoctoral training at the Charles Allen Research Labs at UTMB, where he completed a research fellowship in traumatic brain injury. He also completed a critical care fellowship at UTMB and was a fellow at the university’s Sealy Smith Center on Aging.
Dr. Bedell served at UTMB as assistant director of the Human-Patient Simulator, a mannequin programmed to educate medical students and residents; director of the Department of Anesthesiology Quality Management; director of neuroanesthesia; and program director for the anesthesiology critical care fellowship. In addition, he chaired the institutional resuscitation committee and helped develop the hospital’s rapid response service.
Dr. Bedell’s clinical and research interests include neurocritical care, simulation in health care education, and risk management.
