UAB Director of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery and John D. Sherrill Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery Thomas R. Hunt III, MD, announces the appointment of Professor of Surgery John S. Gould, MD, who joins UAB from the private practice of orthopaedic surgery at Orthopaedic Specialists of Alabama.
This is Dr. Gould’s second UAB faculty appointment. He first joined the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery as assistant professor and chief of the Section of Hand Surgery in 1975. Dr. Gould was promoted to associate professor in 1977 and to professor in 1982. He remained chief of the Section of Hand Surgery for his entire 11-year tenure. During this time, he began the Microsurgery, Research and Training Laboratory and led a neurosurgery team that performed the first replantation of fingers and hands in Alabama and free vascularized tissue transfers, including toe-to-hand reconstructions.
In 1986 Dr. Gould left UAB to become chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. He returned to Alabama a decade later to enter private prac- tice at the Alabama Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center, with an appointment as clinical professor of orthopaedic surgery at University of Virginia, Charlottesville. In 2002 he was appointed clinical professor in the University of South Alabama’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Dr. Gould earned his undergraduate degree in biology from Harvard University and his medical degree from the University of Vermont’s College of Medicine. He completed a surgical internship and residency at Boston City Hospital and a residency in orthopaedics at the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Gould was awarded the Arthritis Foundation Fellowship in Rheumatologic Orthopaedics, which he served at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. He completed a hand surgery fellowship at Duke University, and he was a research fellow in microsurgery and a clinical assistant in plastic surgery at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne, Australia. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery with a certificate of added qualification in hand surgery.
Dr. Gould joined the US Navy in 1966 as a lieutenant. He completed a 6-month tour of Vietnam as a medical officer aboard the USS Canberra, a guided heavy missile cruiser. After his duty in Vietnam, Dr. Gould provided neurosurgical, orthopaedic, and outpatient services at the US Naval Hospital in San Diego. He rose to the rank of lieutenant commander and was honorably discharged from the navy in 1971.
While in the military, Dr. Gould was awarded the National Defense medal, a Vietnam Service medal, a Vietnam Campaign medal, a Meritorious Unit Citation, and the Navy Commendation medal, which is awarded for preparing medical personnel for combat casualty support and for lifesaving treatment of combat casualties by the medical-surgical team.
Among his many honors and awards, Dr. Gould received the award for Distinguished Academic Achievement from University of Vermont Medical Alumni Association (1996); the Distinguished Southern Orthopaedist Award (2001); and certificates of appreciation from the Birmingham Rehabilitation Association (1982) and Cooper Green Hospital (1979). “Best Doctors in America” has included Dr. Gould on its lists in both hand and orthopaedic surgery since 1992.
Dr. Gould belongs to a number of national and international organizations, including the International Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery, the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and the American Orthopaedic Association. He has served as president and vice president and filled other key offices for the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society and is a founding member of the American Society of Reconstructive Surgery. He has served as president of the Jefferson County Orthopaedic Association (1986), the Clinical Orthopaedic Society (1990), and the Mid-America Orthopaedic Association (2000).
Dr. Gould has served on numerous editorial boards and was editor in chief of Microsurgery (1986-1995) and The American Journal of Orthopaedics (2005). He is currently the US editor of International Orthopaedics and foot and ankle editor for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ “Orthopaedic Online Knowledge,” a Web-based textbook and continuing medical education resource.
He has authored three textbooks: The Foot Book, Operative Foot Surgery, and My First Love: The Art, The Practice and The Ethics of Medicine.
Dr. Gould has a clinical interest in total ankle joint replacements (with more than 190 performed to date) and peripheral nerve problems of the upper and lower extremities.
