  • Diabetes mellitus is classified as Type 1 or Type 2. Type 1 results from the autoimmune destruction of pancreatic islets resulting in the complete loss of insulin. Type 2 is a metabolic disorder that results from deficiency, but not absence of insulin. It is commonly associated with obesity. Type 2 Diabetes affects almost 10% of the population while Type 1 is much more rare.
