Colposcopy Fact Sheet

Technique
Procedure involves staining the cervix with 3% acetic acid solution (like vinegar) and viewing the cervix with a special set of binoculars (the colposcope). If any abnormal areas are seen, a small biopsy is taken and sent to a pathologist for evaluation.

No incisions are made in this procedure

Operative Time
The procedure takes approximately 15 minutes.

Anesthesia
• None or
• Local anesthesia

Preoperative Care
• Take 400mg ibuprofen approximately one hour prior to your procedure.

Postoperative Care
These guidelines are intended to give you a general idea of your postoperative course. Since every patient is unique and has a unique procedure, your recovery may differ.
• Anti-inflammatory pain medicine, such as ibuprofen, naproxen, etc., is usually required for the first several days to manage soreness and inflammation.
• Driving is allowed after your procedure.
• Patients may return to work on the same day.
• Nothing in the vagina for 2 weeks.

• You may experience mild vaginal bleeding. Please notify our office for bleeding heavier than your usual menstrual period
