The Travelers' Health Clinic at UAB is the largest Travel/Tropical medicine clinic in Alabama. The clinic serves Alabama as well as areas of Mississippi and Tennessee that are within a 2 or 3 hour drive of us.

The clinic is located in the state of the art, I.M. Pei designed, UAB Kirklin Clinic. UAB is widely recognized as a leader in tropical medicine and international health.

Services provided include:

  • Highly individualized pre- and post-travel consultation with a specialist physician (not a nurse)

  • All CDC/WHO recommended immunizations. We are the only site in Alabama, private or government, that maintains at all times a full vaccine inventory

  • Malaria chemoprophylaxis when indicated

  • Medication for self-treatment of travelers' diarrhea and other common problems

  • Detailed education and extensive printed materials on staying healthy abroad

  • 24 hour/day on-call service for patients becoming ill during or after travel

  • A full parasitology laboratory on site

  • Letter to your primary care physician

Travel Medicine is a distinct medical specialty.

  • More people are travelling than ever before

  • Most MD's are not familiar with exotic diseases in 219 different countries

  • Most MD's and even Public Health Departments simply don't have time to keep up with changing disease patterns in these countries

  • Health care professionals need special training to provide appropriate care. Our Medical Director, Dr. David Freedman, has the experience and training.


Vaccination requirements are not standard for a given country.

  • Written recommendations from official agencies (CDC, WHO) are not always individualized

  • Will vary according to individual itinerary (urban vs. rural), type of travel (5-star vs. backpacking), age, previous vaccinations, previous medical history, length of stay.

  • Each individual in a group of people travelling together to the same place may have totally different vaccine requirements.
