Center for AIDS Research (CFAR)

One of 11 Centers for AIDS Research designated by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the UAB Center represents a multidisciplinary approach to AIDS research, prevention, and treatment. More than 20 departments and divisions of UAB and the Southern Research Institute interact in research programs involving a wide spectrum of basic, preclinical, clinical, and applied research.

More than 100 scientists involved in AIDS-related research at UAB have been funded and mobilized in research that will ultimately lead to new drug discoveries, vaccine development, and detailed knowledge about how the human immunodeficiency virus induces disease. Members of the center have earned international prominence in their respective fields, making the UAB AIDS Center one of the strongest in the United States. Major NIAID-funded AIDS research programs at UAB include a National Cooperative Drug Development Group and a National Cooperative Vaccine Development Group.

While basic research and drug development programs are being conducted in the UAB center, advancement of clinical of AIDS patients is an essential component of the UAB AIDS Center mission. Patients treated by Center physicians have the opportunity to participate in clinical trials of promising new treatments for AIDS and AIDS-related infections. The Center participates in the NIAID Antiviral Study Group, the NIAID Mycoses Study Group, and the AIDS Clinical Trials Group, and it has recently funded an AIDS Vaccine Evaluation Unit where promising new AIDS vaccines are tested. Both medical and social support are provided to adult and pediatric patients by a staff member trained to treat patients with HIV.
