UAB Voice Treatment Center

The purpose of the UAB Voice Treatment Center is to provide outstanding care for individuals who use their voices professionally or for their own pleasure. Those who would benefit include singers, actors, teachers, lawyers, salespersons, ministers and others. A properly functioning voice is essential for the livelihood and quality of life for many in our society.

The UAB Voice Treatment Center brings together medical and vocal expertise to evaluate and treat individuals in a comprehensive and interdisciplinary manner. The three part clinical team includes an Otolaryngologist, Speech Pathologist, and Voice Specialist from the School of Arts and Humanities. Each voice problem is evaluated through these three different lenses before a treatment and rehabilitation plan is recommended. Clients are offered state of the art clinical care coupled with relevant and progressive research in the vocal sciences. Diagnosis and treatment planning are provided in most instances in a single visit to The Kirklin Clinic. Ease of access and a user-friendly environment are emphasized.

During a typical visit to the Voice Treatment Center, the client would discuss his/her concerns with the clinical team and then demonstrate the vocal problem. A medical examination by the physician and specialized testing by the speech pathologist would follow. Finally, the clinical team would jointly discuss findings and reach consensus on a diagnosis and treatment plan for the patient.
