About Us (GI Cancer)

Each year, approximately 200,000 people, in the United States alone are diagnosed with some form of gastrointestinal cancer. Many of these cancers are too complex or difficult to be treated with just one modality. The Multidisciplinary Gastrointestinal Oncology Center was created to provide all complex gastrointestinal cancer patients with a truly multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of their disease.

At the Multidisciplinary Gastrointestinal Oncology Center, patients are seen on an individual basis by three cancer specialists (medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, and surgeon) on their initial clinic visit. These doctors work together to develop a comprehensive treatment plan that is clear and concise. This service exceeds the benefit of the traditional single expert opinion or even a second opinion in that it provides a comprehensive treatment recommendation from three cancer specialists working together as a team on behalf of the patient.

The Multidisciplinary Gastrointestinal Oncology Center is housed primarily within the state-of-the-art Kirklin Clinic and has access to all of UAB Hospital's vast resources. In addition, the center is part of the nationally recognized UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center and benefits from its ground-breaking research and world-class doctors.
