We now have the "Deaf Talk" here at UAB Hospital, Spain Rehab and Russell Clinic. This is a mobile video unit for communicating with hearing impaired patients.
To request this unit have the nurse on the unit where your patient is located contact Guest Services at *55 from any hospital phone. The Guest Services Representative receiving the call will ask for a name and number and make sure someone responsible for the Mobile Video (Deaf Talk) Unit promptly calls back.
Once the unit arrives the instructions for use are on the machine and the set up is quick and easy. Plug it in, turn it on, position the unit 3-8 feet from the patient and assure the patient is centered in the preview screen and their hands are visible. Call 1-866-237-0174 from a nearby phone to initiate the interpreting session. You will need to know what department or unit you are calling from and refer to the Quick User guide on the machine for the client code and unit number.
These services are charged by the minute so when you are finished communicating with your patient ask the interpreter to terminate the call promptly.
