The staff of the Education and Development Division of the Department of
Pharmacy are responsible for training new staff, coordinating pharmacy resident and
student training, and providing educational support services for the pharmacy. Members of
the division maintain the Department's Standards, Policies and Procedures Manual and share
responsibility with the Director for maintaining a state of JCAHO readiness. They also are
responsible for the pharmacy portion of the hospital's patient care computer system, the
Patient Information Network (PIN).
UAB Pharmacy Education & Development
Our philosophy has always been that new staff members are not expected to function in
their new roles until they receive thorough and comprehensive training.
Initial
orientation lasts for several weeks and includes an introduction to the department, review
of standards, policies and procedures, computer training, and individualized training in
the person's area of responsibility. Recertification and validation of staff is
coordinated through this division. Continuing education required for Alabama licensure is
offered to pharmacists and certified technicians through regular PAPs (Professional
Advancement Programs). In addition, pharmacists have numerous opportunities to attend
functions that are offered in a large teaching hospital, e.g., medical conferences,
grand rounds, etc.
