Drug Information Practice Residency

The Specialty Residency in Drug Information Practice is a one year post-graduate program accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.  The program is designed to allow acquisition of expert-level competency in the development and provision of clinically-oriented drug information. The program is organized to provide extensive experience in the storage, retrieval, and use of medical and drug information. Special emphasis is placed on development of oral and written communication skills.  In addition to these core activities, experiences are offered in administrative functions, toxicology and poison information, and clinical practice in a variety of medical and surgical patient populations.

Resident Activities

  • Respond to drug information requests
  • Prepare literature reviews for the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee
  • Conduct Medication Usage Evaluations
  • Write articles for pharmacy and medical staff newsletter
  • Conduct a Major Research Project
  • Participate in surveillance and reporting of ADRs and medication errors
  • Participate in research related to pharmaceutical care

Training

To fulfill the qualifications for graduation, the resident is required to complete the major research project and the required activities as outlined in the following schedule:

      *        Elective rotations include up to two 4-week periods in clinical electives offered to pharmacy practice residents.
     **        Practice Management consists of a one week period under the direct supervision of the Director of Pharmacy.  This does not include time for administrative duties in drug information.  In addition to this week, the resident will be required to participate in weekly meetings with other residents, the residency coordinator, and the Director of Pharmacy
    .
     ***    Personal time may be used for interviews, major project activities, personal emergencies or time off.  It must be granted with approval of the Residency Program Director, Residency Coordinator, and the Drug Information Residency Program Director.

    Application Requirements

    The applicant must possess a Pharm.D. degree, have completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency, and submit a completed application and recommendations from two members of his or her pharmacy faculty and one other individual to the Director of Therapeutic Policy Management. The applicant must submit the application no later than January 31st.  A personal interview is also required.
