The Drug Information Service supports the pharmaceutical care efforts of pharmacy practitioners. These practitioners are involved in medication usage evaluation activities, identifying and reporting medication errors and suspected adverse drug reactions, and assuring appropriate, cost-effective use of medications. Many of these efforts are coordinated and supported by the Drug Information Service.
In addition to support of departmental activities, the Drug Information Service provides support for medical staff activities via the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. The Drug Information Service also supervises publication of the Drug Information Bulletin, the newsletter of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. The Bulletin is published monthly and provides timely reviews of drug therapy issues, reports on Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee decisions, and brief summaries of pertinent news items.
The Drug Information Service also responds to direct inquiries from health care professionals within the UAB Health-System, health care providers in surrounding areas, and the public. The service also provides educational opportunities for Doctor of Pharmacy clerkship students, residents in pharmacy practice, and a resident in the ASHP accredited specialty residency in Drug Information Practice.
The Drug Information Service is located in the Drug Resource Center which is equipped with a variety of tertiary resources, on-line search capabilities, Internet access, and a core collection of internal medicine and pharmacy journals. Additional resources are available from the Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences located on the UAB campus.
