Medical West Offers Diabetic Education Classes to the Community
Diabetes currently affects more than 300,000 people in Alabama. In fact, diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the state. Medical West is joining the fight against diabetes by offering monthly Diabetic Education classes to the community.
Despite all the advances in diabetes treatment, education remains the cornerstone of diabetes management. Differences in diet, exercise levels, stress and other factors may all affect blood sugar levels. The more people with diabetes learn how these factors affect them, they may be able to better control their disease.
Dr. Rita Armitage, Ophthalmologist at Medical West, will be the guest speaker at the next Diabetic Education class, which will be held on July 24, 2008 at 6 p.m. in the Civic Room. Dr. Armitage will be speaking about the importance of eye care for diabetics. Each year, between 12,000 and 24,000 people lose their sight because of diabetes. The key to preventing diabetes-related eye problems is good control of blood glucose levels, a healthy diet and good eye care.
