Critical care Transport is a hospital based, inter-facility transport program for patients in the United States and world wide that require transport from one medical facility to another. Crtitical Care Transport has been providing medical transports for over 25 years and has transported over 34,000 patients. Jet aircraft intensive care units provide top-notch support during long-distance patient transports. For local transports, Critical Care Transport has three mobile intensive care units that maintain sophisticated, uninterupted ICU care.

Each adult medical transport team is staffed with a Registered Nurse, a Respiratory Therapist, and as needed or requested, a physician.  Each team member is specially trained in aeromedical physiology. For neonatal patients requiring transport, a Neonatal Nurse Practictioner and Respiratory Therapist are used to care for the critical neonatal patients.  There is also an intra-aortic balloon pump team which has transported over 500 patients requiring this support.  The teams have access to the 900+ faculty physicians of University Hospital, named for the sixteenth year in a row in U.S. News and Report's "America's Best Hospitals".

One twin engine jet is available at all times for immediate dispatch with the most appropriate transport team for the patients requirements. A Lear jet is also available for long distance or international transports.  Three large ground mobile intensive care units are available and used for local transports within approximately 125 miles of Birmingham, Alabama.

CCT has been accredited by CAMTS, the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (link below), since 1999.  CAMTS is a peer review organization that provides voluntary compliance with standards focused on its two highest priorities, air medical and ground quality patient care and safety of the transport environment.  It is a marker of excellence for federal, state and local governmental agencies as well as private agencies and the general public.  CCT was the most cited program in CAMTS 2007 Best Practices publication, and in its last site survey in 2008 was recognized for an area of excellence for its safety management system and an area of acknowledgement for its quality management program.

Critical Care Transport is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.  Complete arrangements for bedside to bedside transport, including ground transportation for air trips, are made by the Critical Care Transport Coordinator.  All Coordinators are Manager-level Registered Nurses or Registered Respiratory Therapists.
