Funded by the NHLBI, the
Lung Health Study (LHS) is a series of research studies focused on
chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) prevention.
- LHS I provided evidence that smoking cessation reduces the decline of lung function in smokers at risk for COPD.
- LHS II is focused on relating cancer incidence to genetic characteristics.
- The goal of the recently funded LHS III is to determine the long-term effects of smoking cessation and continued smoking on morbidity, mortality and the rate of lung function decline in persons with early COPD.
