Dr. Thomley, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, received his undergraduate degree from Auburn University and his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Following his internship at Carraway Methodist Medical Center, he completed his residency at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine, where he also completed a fellowship training in Vitreoretinal diseases and surgery.

He continues to concentrate his practice in the diagnosis and comprehensive medical, laser and surgical care of all aspects of vitreoretinal disease, including retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vascular disease, macular diseases and surgery, ocular inflammatory and infectious disease, intraocular tumors and ocular trauma.

He is a clinical assistant professor, University of Alabama Department of Ophthalmology. Dr. Thomley is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Vitreous Society, and serves on the board of directors of the Alabama Academy of Ophthalmology.
