Dr. Mays is from Decatur, Alabama. He earned a Bachelor's and Master's degree from the University of Alabama, then attended the Manhattan School of Music and the Conservatory of Music in Hanover, Germany. He earned his M.D. degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine and later interned at Carraway Methodist Medical Center in Birmingham. He completed a residency in ophthalmology at the Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital, University of Alabama and served as chief resident. Dr. Mays completed a fellowship in glaucoma at the University of Florida.
Dr. Mays is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is the Ophthalmology Residency Program Director. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Glaucoma Society and the American Medical Association.
