Your doctor has just given you an unfamiliar diagnosis or prescribed a new drug or requested a different medical test for you- where can you go to get information to help you understand your medical situation?

On November 1, 2006 The Kirklin Clinic Patient Resource Library opened to help answer your specific medical questions. The library is staffed by a medical librarian at all times who is ready to assist in computer searches or guide you in book selections.

The library offers over 400 books, videos, and DVDs for check-out over a 2-week period, with renewal by telephone for an additional 2 weeks or you can take a mailing envelope to mail an item back to the library.

There are also books and magazines which are in a reference collection for use in the library only, but there is access to free xeroxing for articles of interest.

In addition, the library houses over 200 free brochures from the national organizations such as the American Cancer Society, National Cancer Institute, Leukemia-Lymphoma Society, American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, Arthritis Foundation, and many more.

There are two computers for visitors to use for internet searches for medical information, and the librarians are there to assist you in these searches. The collection also contains over 100 Clipfiles on various medical topics such as: colon cancer, chemotherapy, nutrition, Crohn’s disease, Celiac disease, support, CT scans, lupus.

The mission of the Patient Resource Library is to provide quick and easy access to medical information that is current, accurate and easy to understand. The library offers an “Instant-Info” on many medical topics and can prepare one specifically for a visitor, if requested. Information can be picked up at the library or mailed to the visitor.

Our library is guided by these two statements:

  • “A medical diagnosis is difficult. Learning about the disease doesn’t have to be.”
  • “In overcoming a disease, knowledge can make all the difference.”

We hope you will bring your medical questions to The Kirklin Clinic Patient Resource Library and let our staff help you search for the information you need.
