Critical Care Transport
UAB’s Critical Care Transport Service provides quick, safe transportation from any hospital to UAB for patients who require specialized care or equipment available in tertiary facilities. Transportation may be arranged locally, nationally, or internationally.
The service is designed to meet the needs of patients for whom conventional transportation methods are not appropriate. The program operates three dedicated twin engine jets and three mobile units. All jets and mobile units are fully equipped intensive care units, allowing the transport team to maintain as much of an ICU environment as possible.
The four distinct UAB Hospital-based physician-led teams distinguish the transport service. These specialized teams, including one each for adult, neonatal, and pediatric patients and patients who require an intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), accompany each patient during transport. Every team includes a physician, an ICU/flight nurse, and a respiratory therapist, and all team members are additionally trained in aeromedical physiology.
The Critical Care Transport Service is available to patients of any physician, regardless of the physician's location or the patient's destination. To access this service, ask your physician to call the UAB MIST number and speak with the transport coordinator.
Escort Services
Complimentary patient escort services are available throughout UAB Hospital. These escorts wear uniforms for easy identification. If you should need assistance, a wheelchair, or a stretcher, an escort may be summoned to any area of the hospital. If you are near an information desk, request an escort there; however, if you find yourself in need of assistance at any time during your visit, simply ask any staff member to help you secure an escort.
Financial Counselors
Hospital financial counselors can offer you economic options to make sure that you are clear regarding your financial responsibilities before services are rendered. Counselors also analyze insurance benefits in order to verify coverage and benefits payable. Financial counselors are available in the Admissions Office and will assist you at the time of registration. If you need further financial counseling assistance, call (205) 975-5678.
Home Health Services
UAB Home Health ensures that you receive excellent care as you leave the hospital and return home.
