Dr. Joiner is a native of Alabama. He attended Dartmouth College and Birmingham-Southern College. In 1984 he received his medical degree from the University of South Alabama. He served an internship at Carraway Medical Center and then a residency at UAB/Callahan Eye Foundation. He also completed a fellowship in glaucoma at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.

Dr. Joiner has been a faculty member of the UAB Department of Ophthalmology since 1989. He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. His primary interest is the treatment of glaucoma.
