With patients arriving each day from throughout the world, UAB Hospital is an exciting place to provide pastoral care. Often known as UAB, the University of Alabama at Birmingham is internationally renowned for its exceptional health-related services and educational and research activities. Currently supporting an enrollment of approximately 15,000 students, UAB is situated on 240 adjoining acres of land (almost 70 city blocks), only eight blocks from downtown Birmingham. With 12,000 employees, UAB is easily the metropolitan area’s largest employer.

The UAB medical Center is composed of the School of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Optometry, Public Health, Health Related Professionals, and the much acclaimed UAB Hospital, which was established in 1945 as the teaching hospital for the University of Alabama School of Medicine.

As a tertiary-care facility, UAB Hospital provides specialized care and research in many medical areas including heart disease and surgery, organ transplantation, kidney disease, lung disease, cancer, diabetes, strokes, arthritis, spinal cord injuries, and critically ill newborns, among many others.
