Dr. Callahan was born in Birmingham, Alabama. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Birmingham - Southern College, in 1967, and graduated from the University of Alabama School of Medicine-Birmingham in 1971. He served an internship at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, Department of Medicine in 1972, and completed a residency in opthalmology at the University of California at San Francisco in 1975. He completed fellowships in Pediatric Ophthalmology, Indiana University School of Medicine in , July - October, 1975; Phacoemulsification and Anterior Segment surgery is Dr. Charles Kelman, Manhattan Eye and Ear Hospitals, New York City, New York in October - December, 1975; Ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery with Dr. Alston Callahan, Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital, Birmingham in 1976.
Dr. Callahan has been a member of the UAB Department of Ophthalmology since 1992. He was a trustee of the Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital board from 1976 - 2004. He has been appointed to the Board of the Alabama Eye Insitute, Inc. Dr. Callahan is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
