  • Cataract removal and lens implants
A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear, transparent lens of your eye that causes your sight to become foggy. Most cataracts develop as a result of aging. Others may result from injury or disease, or they may be inherited and present at birth. When a cataract begins to become more dense and hinder your vision, you should have it removed.

Surgery is the only way to remove a cataract, and your ophthalmologist is the only doctor who can do it for you. More than 95 percent of patients who have cataract surgery can see much better afterward. Cataracts are not removed with a laser. Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital eye surgeons remove a cataract and implant an artificial lens through an extremely tiny incision, which means there is typically less discomfort and a quicker recovery period than in traditional cataract surgery.

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is a procedure that is designed to improve vision for nearsighted patients and reduce or eliminate the need for corrective eyewear. It is often prescribed for patients who are 18 years of age and older and whose prescription for corrective eyewear has not changed in the last year. PRK uses a laser that accurately, quickly, and precisely reshapes the cornea. Nearly 95 percent of patients who undergo PRK have improved vision of 20/40 or better. Close to 60 percent see 20/20 after PRK.The Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital at UAB has one of the few excimer lasers in the state used to perform PRK.

The Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital is a leader in all types of laser technologies. The argon laser is used to treat patients with glaucoma and retinal problems. The YAG laser is used to clear cloudy membranes that sometimes occur after cataract surgery.
